LAHORE: The FIA Lahore has registered 5,500 cybercrime complaints this year in order to fill the loopholes in the correlation between cybercrimes and the psychological issues which are growing in youth.

According to sources, people avoid launching online complaints due to slow and time-consuming process. In response to that, FIA said that process is not slow but cybercrime cases are treated accordingly.

The cybercrime complaints registered this year mainly include hacking, identity theft, cyber-bullying, cyber-stalking, cyber harassment, data and security breach, financial fraud, digital piracy, intellectual property rights violation, electronic terrorism, extortion.

FIA has established National Response Center (NRC) in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Quetta in agenda to empower women and speak-up for their selves.

According to some sources, the process of filing online cybercrime complaints is quite slow-paced as it takes 30 to 60 days to process because of which many women avoid reporting the issues.

FIA Cybercrime Wing Lahore Assistant Director Muhammad Usman said,

We have received almost 5,500 cybercrime complaints from Lahore which include complaints about blackmailing, fraud, hacking, and piracy among other.

Asking about harassment complaints he told,

Not only have women filed complaints of harassment against women but men have also spoken up against women who harassed them on social media.

Inquiries on more than 2,500 cybercrime complaints have been initiated and cases have been registered. He further told that sometimes complaints are withdrawn if two parties agree to a settlement.

Sometimes the complaints are dropped when there is no follow-up on them but mostly we initiate inquiries on such complaints. Only a few hundreds of total registered complaints are still pending.

On the slow process, he said that our process is not slow but the integrity and status of cybercrime complaints are different. They collect evidence from different sources. Likewise, the suspect is not always easy to get identified and hence it takes time to identify them. Once we gather all the information, we draw a conclusion.

He concluded,

We have resolved cases and punished those who were proven to be guilty.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg just rejected a request to appear before the International Parliamentary Committee for the investigation of the fake news.

The refusal came after the UK Parliament’s Media Committee Head Damian Collins joined forces with his Canadian counterpart in hopes of forcing Mark Zuckerberg to appear as he did before the US Congress.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies before a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing regarding the company’s use and protection of user data on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. on April 11, 2018.

He rejected the invitation to appear before the International Grand Committee session 27 November, giving arguments on the implications of Zuckerberg to appear before the Parliaments.

Australia, Argentina, and Ireland was involved in the grand committee, said by Collins,

Five Parliaments are now calling on you to do the right thing by the 170 million users in the countries they represent.

Terror content on many social media mediums is available majorly related to the Islamic State (IS), Al-Qaeda, and their affiliates which not only promote extremism but also affect the younger generation making them believe their schemes. To avoid these attempts many mediums are working to reduce these kinds of terror content if they are available on their mediums.

Facebook is also working on the front foot against this terror content, as it claims to remove a total of about 14 million terror-related pieces with the help of their new machine learning tools that not only identified these posts but also take lesser time to reduce if reported by its users.

It works across in 19 different languages and also uses audio and text-hashing techniques for detecting terrorist content. They started this task at the beginning of this year by dividing into Q1, Q2, and Q3.

In Q1; they took action on 1.9 million pieces of terror content than in Q2 they took action on 9.4 million pieces of terror content as a majority of which was old material. In Q3, the overall content declined to 3 million, of which 800,000 pieces of content were old which shows significant increases from Q1.

User-reported terror content removals grew around 16,000 in Q3 from 10,000 in Q1 along with that the new machine learning tools have also reduced the amount of time the content reported by its users stays on the platform, from 43 hours in Q1 to 18 hours in Q3.

Seeing these positive attempts made by Facebook, the US Department of Justice warn IS supporters to be careful when posting propaganda on Facebook, pointing to the network’s Q1 2018. As pushing propaganda on the social media giant is getting more and more difficult.

U.S. President Donald Trump and other conservatives accused Twitter, Facebook and Google of allegedly boiling traditionalist views; he said that he would consider working with Democrats to regulate social media companies

On Wednesday, Trump urged caution in efforts to regulate social media companies. He said:

Believe it or not, I’m one that really likes free speech. A lot of people don’t understand that, but I am a big believer. And when you start regulating, a lot of bad things can happen.

In a question that either he would consider working with the Democrats to regulate social media companies he said:

I would do that, yeah. I would look at that.

His officials made various efforts towards cutting environmental and financial rules. Last month, Trump suggested that Twitter was biased against him and accused the company of removing many of his followers. He said that the company had stifled growth to a point where it is obvious to all.

In response, Twitter said that it was due to their recent move to delete millions of suspicious accounts who were aiming to do misinformation campaigns to influence voters in the 2018 U.S. presidential and other elections.

Despite that, Trump is a keen user of Twitter which lets him bypass TC news and newspapers in order to communicate directly with the supporters.

Writing down messages, doing group chats, sending pictures, videos or recordings is kinda a daily routine for every one of us but sometimes we send the message accidentally or after sending felt that it doesn’t suit the chat and end up being embarrassed and want that it wouldn’t have happened in the first place. Later we end-up giving descriptions of our actions.

To avoid such embarrassed movements, Facebook Messenger is going to launch this new feature soon that will be available for all users.

It all begins when in April this year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was found to be using it and we get to know that this feature was already available on messenger but only for the company’s top members. Facebook never want to make it public and leaving the company with an accusation of breaching users trust.

These 10 minutes feature 10 are going to be given to the users to delete such messages, keeping in mind that such feature is already available on WhatsApp within a specific duration.

After a good election day, Facebook executives tried to let up but there’s no room for them to have a sigh of relief.

Social media companies tried to clear up their services since last two years in order to deliver the good ones only. However, the calm on these platforms after Election Day signifies that chaos of election campaigns can be controlled.

But not forgetting that this year’s midterm elections revealed how Facebook is delicate towards such burning cycles.

With the constant vigilance from law enforcement agencies, academic researchers, and digital security experts, the Election Day was just a disaster-free day.

It wasn’t just a campaign, but constantly breaking a sweat of dozens of staff members working round-the-clock shifts. A massive number of journalists and fact checker willing to police the platform for false news stories and frauds so these can be controlled before going viral.

Looking for the unending list of misinformation on Facebook was like a piece of cake. There are doctored photos, disprovable lies, and hoaxers and conspiracy theorists, who used the platform to spin falsehoods and stir up tribal anger.

In a recent study by Oxford Internet Institute, an Oxford University department found that 25 percent of all election-related content shared on Facebook and Twitter during the midterm election season could be classified as junk news. Mr. Reynolds; a Facebook spokesman; said

Over the last two years, we’ve worked hard to prevent misuse of Facebook during elections…Our teams worked round the clock during the midterms to reduce the spread of misinformation thwart efforts to discourage people from voting and deal with issues of hate on our services.

Last month, a viral post falsely racked up nearly 80,000 shares, more than any post by The New York Times, The Washington Post, or Fox News during the entire month of October.

The anti-abuse system the Facebook put in place after the 2016 election has not gone smoothly. The main steps including the one which Facebook took to prevent Russian style influence campaigns were to force political advertisers to verify their identities. But Paid for By disclaimers on paid ads allowed authorized advertisers to publish their desired content.

Facebook has shield itself from the bad actors trying to exploit its services. Since the Election Day itself had been a success, but the company still had plenty to worry about. Michael Posner, a professor of ethics and finance at New York University’s Stern School of Business said:

I give them better marks for being on the case. But it’s yet to be seen how effective it’s going to be. There’s an awful lot of disinformation still out there.

As Facebook cracked down the domestic disinformation networks, banning particularly bad actors, and hiring more people to deal with emerging threats, it has covered a great milestone to give a protected platform. It has shown responsibly a wider role in the overall Election Day campaign, but it is accountable for the flood of lies and manipulation left after it.

The US midterm election was crucial by both republicans and Democrats because both chambers of Congress have the ability to pass of reject President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Federal Authorities said in a statement:

Americans should be aware that foreign actors, and Russia in particular, continue to try to influence public sentiment and voter perceptions through actions intended to show discord.

Social media channels say that they are now more vigilant against foreign and other potential election interference after realizing that they are unprepared to tackle such activities in the US presidential election two years ago.
